Reference material of LuYang’s work. Modify the inner structure of a traditional grand piano. Remove the original parts such as the strings and dampers and replace the soundboard with a lying board with countless perforations, upon which the participant can lie down naked. Select a proper position to secure the participant. When the player presses a key, the corresponding hammer rises and strikes the skin of the participant through the holes of the lying board.
The participant feels the music through his body physically. The hammers of the INSTRUMAN. are modified into two different stimulation modes: Acupuncture Mode and Temperature Mode. 1. In Acupuncture Mode, the hammers are replaced with acupuncture needles and repositioned according to the acupuncture points of the participant, who senses the music through these stimulations. 2. In Temperature Mode, ceramic hammers are heated to temperatures corresponding to the notes played.
The music becomes a flow of heat through the body.As the player proceeds with his/her playing, the participant feels varying degrees of stimulation. Under strong stimulation, the participant could lose control and start to moan or even burst out yelling, at which point the player can change his/her playing style and start to improvise. Such is the so-called INSTRUMAN.
The participant can also request different music from the player according to his/her preference of stimulation; however, the requested music must be played in its entirety before the participant can leave the lying board. During this whole process of music playing the participant and the INSTRUMAN must remain completely unseparated; the participant must feel rather than listen to the music from beginning to end.
